When I first heard how a simple change in my thinking could dramatically increase what’s left in my bank account, I thought it was a joke. It couldn’t be true… Or could it? Do you feel a sense of dread or worry when you log in to your banking, open your account and see what your current balance is? Do you open your account or visit the bank, only to leave feeling stressed and anxious?
In early 2011, I was trapped in a crushing world of secret financial pain, shaking from anxiety, afraid and filled with hot sweats every time my phone rang. I was in severe trouble to the tune of $30,000 of credit card debt, earning a minimum wage and without any way out. This situation set me on a course to discover how my thinking created my reality and how I could change my financial wellbeing.
I learned that if I wanted to change on the outside, I had to begin within. I needed to change how I thought about myself and money. Here are 3 powerful yet simple lessons that I used to turn my financial situation (and bank account) positive by changing my thinking and you can too!
Lesson 1: Understand money is just a reflection of what we believe about ourselves, our sense of self-worth and what we deserve in life. The biggest discovery was how believing that I was worth nothing, I wasn’t good enough, and that I was useless, was what caused me to be in financial disaster. It’s as if negative thoughts like these go out from us and the universe is listening! I had to change what I thought about myself and my worth.
Lesson 2: When I first heard the statement from Louise Hay “Money is the easiest thing to demonstrate” I was angry, actually furious! How could it be easy to demonstrate? I didn’t have any! Then I realized the core of this message is that… Money is easy to demonstrate (whether I had it or not) as a direct reflection of my inner thoughts, feelings and actions. I was simply demonstrating the lack of it!
Everything begins as a thought, then it transports into a feeling, which we act upon. If we can catch what we’re thinking, then we can change the thought, leading to a new inspired action. Start feeling prosperous and being thankful for what you already have and the Universe will bring you more to feel good about.
Exercise: Consider the money patterns you learned as a child. What did you learn about money growing up? How did your mother and father use money when you were young? Were they very different in their use of money?
What patterns do you still have that your parents had? It’s amazing how every time we examine our early beliefs about any area of life, we learn why we do the things we do. Next, consider what your learned behaviours and present day beliefs around money are.
Lesson 3: Eliminate negative thoughts and the only ones left are positive. It really is this simple. When you know what thoughts you need to eliminate (and you eliminate them), positive thoughts will flood into your mental space and replace them. Like attracts like! What we think really does become true. Eliminate negative thinking, replace it with positive thoughts and you will attract more good into your life – more good than you could ever imagine!
